Options for Applying for Social Security Benefits

When applying for benefits through the Social Security Administration, there are several different options on how to apply.  You can apply:

  • online,
  • over the phone, or
  • in-person at a Social Security office

Many patients and caregivers ask Cancer Legal Care, “What is the best way to apply?”  The answer, of course, is “it depends.”

Here are some things to consider when trying to decide how to apply for benefits:

1. What type of benefit are you applying for?  You can apply for any type of benefit over the phone or by making an appointment to visit your local Social Security office in person.

Applying online is a good option for anyone who has access to the internet and a computer.  But keep in mind that you cannot apply for all benefits online.  Currently, you cannot apply online for Survivor Benefits or some types of Family Benefits (benefits for a spouse, ex-spouse or child of someone entitled to Retirement or Disability benefits).  To apply for these benefits, you will need to call Social Security to make an appointment to apply over the phone or in-person.

2. Do you have an online Social Security account? Before you apply online, you will need to create a My Social Security Account and be signed into that account when applying.

An online Social Security account is also a useful tool for anyone who has paid into the Social Security system or receive Social Security benefits.  You can check the status of your application, see your earnings history, report an address change, print proof of benefits, and access important tax documents.

3. How close do you live to a Social Security office? Before applying in-person, check to see how far you will need to travel.  You can use this online tool find the location of your local Social Security office.

4. Did you make an appointment? To apply over the telephone or in person, you will need to make an appointment.  Social Security has moved to an appointment-based service model. This means you need an appointment to apply for benefits in person or over the phone.

5. Will Social Security require you to prove your identity in person? Starting April 14, 2025, a person who applies for benefits over the phone may need to go in-person to their local social security office to prove their identity.  If you are required to go into the office after filing a claim over the phone, SSA will notify you. You only need to go in-person to a local social security office if you are told to do so by SSA.
